Beauty Salon & Cosmetic Procedures - Jargon Buster!

January 24, 2017

Have you thought about getting a certain procedure done but can’t remember the name of it?

Or are there words used in beauty that you just aren’t quite sure what they mean?

Don’t worry, we are here to help you.

In this blog we have clarified some of the names, phrases and terminology that gets bounded around in salons all over the country, including ours, so you know exactly what is what.

What is Nouveau LVL / Lash Lift?

LVL specifically means length, volume and lift, in relation to eye lashes.

The procedure of this treatment starts with a silicone base stuck to your eyelids and your lashes are then gently bonded to the shield. This is what your lashes will be curled around during the treatment. The size of the curl depends on the size of the shield applied, which will be decided by your beautician based on the length of your natural lashes.

This is followed by adding a lifting balm to the lashes, which is then removed before tinting them.

A serum is then added to the lashes to moisturize, add shine, protection, and to gently remove the lashes from the shield.

The end result is beautifully long, curled lashes that last up to 6 weeks. Perfect if you prefer to wear less makeup or none at all, like on the beach!

Now we come to Nouveau. Nouveau is a brand who are experts in eye lash treatments. They also invented the LVL!

A beautician should only ever call this type of treatment an LVL if they are trained by Nouveau and use their products. Unfortunately, many learn the procedure through a cheaper or uncertified course and often use other branded products for the treatment.

We at Tru Tan & Beauty are fully trained and certified by Nouveau and only ever use their products, so we can officially call this procedure an LVL!

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a liquid material that is injected into the skin to plump a specific area to the point that winkles or folds have disappeared. The effects can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, dependent on the type of filler used.

Filler is not to be confused with Botox. Botox stop muscles from moving, filler plumps the skin (more below).

Filler is often used for plumping thin lips, smoothing out lines, augmenting cheeks, filling out hollows under the eyes and hiding scars from acne or chicken pox.

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a good quality brand of filler used mainly in the face to correct folds, creases and plump lips. The Juvederm products are smooth, unlike other products used in the market.

What is Tear Through treatment?

Want to get rid of eye bags, dark circles or sunken, tired looking eyes? Tear Through treatment does just that.

During the treatment, dermal filler is injected in tiny amounts to precise areas that a doctor marks before starting. The area is then massaged for a smooth result.

Results are immediate and can last up to 12 months.

What is Botox?

Often used as the name of the anti-wrinkle cosmetic procedure, Botox is actually the name of the brand of injection, not the procedure.

Botox is injected into areas of the face which blocks the chemical that tells a muscle when to contract. As these certain facial muscles are now not contracting, the appearance of the wrinkle will iron out. It lasts around 3-4 months.

What is Azzalure?

A rival to Botox, Azzalure is a UK made, anti-wrinkle product that works in the same way. It is our preferred choice here at Tru Tan & Beauty.

What is a Sun Angel?

A Sun Angel is a newer, improved version of the usual sunbed.

When you use a Sun Angel sunbed, you must first scan various areas of your skin using the supplied sensor machine. This sensor will work out the optimal tanning program for you to ensure that you get a beautiful tan without burning.

What is a Collagen Bed?

It looks much like a sunbed but a collagen bed does much more than tan you.

Using red light therapy, the bed penetrates into your skin to activate collagen growth. This then allows more oxygen to flow into the skin cells, giving it a plumper look and tightening the skin.

The bed can treat a number of skin imperfections, including acne, scars, stretch marks, eczema and psoriasis. It is a great alternative to injections and you don’t even need to have the ‘sun bed’ part switched on!

All of the above treatments are available with us at Tru Tan and Beauty and are carried out by specifically trained beauticians with top of the range products.

If you have decided on a procedure, or still a little unsure, give us a call today and we will be happy to talk it through with you.
